SOUNDS OF CHINA: A CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
In collaboration with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center Presents, CFAS will be kicking off the citywide Chinese New Year festivities on February 15 with Sounds of China: A New Year Celebration. The performance will feature traditional and contemporary celebratory works by both Chinese and Chinese American composers, such as Jiuyue Ma, Chen Yi, and Lei Liang. Soloists from the National Chinese Traditional Orchestra will perform on traditional instruments, while members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will demonstrate how Chinese American composers have been influenced by their heritage. This concert will mark CFAS’ debut at Symphony Center.

Celebrating its 31st year, the Chinese Fine Arts Society, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Choose Chicago, kicks off the Year of the Sheep with a festive display of traditional Chinese dance, music, puppetry, and martial arts. Be dazzled by the movements and sounds of lion dancers as they beat their drums to scare away evil sprits and bring good luck for the New Year, and take in the beauty and elegance of traditional Chinese dance and music presented by some of Chicago’s finest artists. Don’t forget to wear red for good fortune!
As part of Navy Pier’s Neighborhoods of the World series, the Chinese Fine Arts Society will continue celebrating the Year of the Sheep with music, dance, crafts and local vendors. This is the perfect event to bring your family for an interactive experience they won’t soon forget!
CFAS and the Civitas Ensemble will co-present an all-Chinese concert on Sunday, March 15 at 3:00 pm at Nichols Hall. Works will include a world premiere by composer Yao Chen, as well as the completed work commissioned by CFAS titled “The Five Elements” by Zhou Long.
In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, the Finale will feature a world premiere by Huang Ruo written for and performed by violinist Rachel Barton Pine, as well as feature highlights from the entire series.
