2012 Competition Dates, Repertoire, Fees

The Chinese Fine Arts Society is pleased to present the 28th Annual Music Festival in Honor of Confucius. This year’s competitions and festival performances will take place on Sunday, October 21, 2012, all day, at the Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago, 1312 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Specific performance times and instructions for individual participants will be mailed to each participant.

The Winners Concert will be held on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at 3:00 PM in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Repertoire Selections

Contestants may participate in any of four Festival Competitions or the non-competitive Voice Category:

CONFUCIUS COMPETITION – our flagship competition for cellists, violinists and pianists ages 18 years or younger. Each contestant performs one piece from the required Chinese repertoire, and one piece of the contestant’s choice to compete for cash prizes and earn Huang Zhong points towards participation trophies. CHINESE INSTRUMENT COMPETITION – our flagship competition for instrumentalists of Chinese instruments ages 18 and younger. Each contestant performs one Chinese piece of the contestant’s choice to compete for cash prizes and earn Huang Zhong points towards participation trophies.

2012 AMEI HU LIN VIOLIN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION – for advanced
musicians ages 18 or younger. The 2011 required repertoire is “Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 50” Movement I. Allegro moderato by Tyzen Hsiao. Each performer performs the required repertoire piece to compete for a $500 scholarship.

2012 VIRGINIA GEYSER BEHRENDT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION – for advanced musicians ages 25 or younger. Each ensemble performs the required repertoire piece to compete for a shared $1200 scholarship. Repertoire TBA

VOICE CATEGORY – for non-professional vocalists of all age groups. This category will be run as a non-competitive festival for 2012. Participants are invited to perform a Chinese repertoire piece of their choice. Each participant will have a total performance time of 8 minutes. All participants will be awarded a MFHC Certificate of Participation and Huang Zhong participation points.

Application Fees and Due Date

A $50 non-refundable fee per entry is required with the completed online application form, which must be submitted on or before Monday, September 17, 2012. Late applications will not be accepted
