Migratory Journeys Competition Announced!
CFAS is pleased to announce its Third International Music Composition Competition, “Migratory Journeys.” Prizes will be awarded to composers who create new works inspired by the wandering, resettling, and emigration of Chinese diaspora population through the world. 2010 Competition Dates, Repertoire, Fees

The Chinese Fine Arts Society is pleased to present the 26th Annual Music Festival in Honor of Confucius. This year’s competitions and festival performances will take place on Sunday, October 24, 2010, all day, at the Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago, 1312 South Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Specific performance times and instructions for individual participants will be mailed to each participant.
The Winners Concert will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at 3:00 PM in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center.
Repertoire Selections
Contestants may participate in any of three Festival Competitions or the non-competitive Chinese Instruments Category:
CONFUCIUS COMPETITION – our flagship competition for cellists, violinists and pianists ages 18 years or younger. Each contestant performs one piece from the required Chinese repertoire, and one piece of the contestant’s choice to compete for cash prizes and earn Huang Zhong points towards participation trophies. 2010 AMEI HU LIN SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION – for advanced musicians ages 18 or younger. The 2010 required repertoire is “Saliha” for Cello and Piano by Huang Xiao Long. Each duet group performs the required repertoire piece to compete for a $500 scholarship.
2010 VIRGINIA GEYSER BEHRENDT SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION – for advanced musicians ages 25 or younger. This year’s required repertoire is “Memories of Home, Suite No. 1” [click for excerpt] for Piano by Tyzen Hsiao. Each contestant performs the required repertoire piece to compete for a $1200 scholarship.

CHINESE INSTRUMENTS CATEGORY – for non-professional players of all Chinese instruments in any age group. There is no required age limit. This category will be run as a non-competitive festival for 2010. Participants are invited to perform a Chinese repertoire piece of their choice. Each participant will have a total performance time of 10 minutes. All participants will be awarded a MFHC-CIC Certificate of Participation and Huang Zhong participation points.
Application Fees and Due Date
A $40 non-refundable fee per entry is required with the completed online application form, which must be submitted on or before Monday, September 20, 2010. Applications will not be accepted if submitted later than September 20, 2010. Festival entry fee can be paid online using our secure PayPal payment system or by sending checks or money orders payable to the “Chinese Fine Arts Society”, postmarked NO LATER THAN September 20, 2010, to:
