Chen Yi, composer. “As a Distinguished Professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance, a prolific composer and recipient of the prestigious Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2001-04), Chen Yi* blends Chinese and Western traditions, transcending cultural and musical boundaries. Through doing so, she serves as an ambassador to the arts, creating music that reaches a wide range of audiences, inspiring people with different cultural backgrounds throughout the world. She holds both a BA and MA in music composition from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and received her DMA from Columbia University in the City of New York, studying composition with Wu Zuqiang, Chou Wen-chung and Mario Davidovsky. Stephen Burns, Fulcrum Point New Music Project. Trumpet virtuoso and conductor Stephen Burns is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Fulcrum Point New Music Project in Chicago. He has been acclaimed on four continents for his consistently and widely varied performances encompassing recitals, orchestral appearances, chamber ensemble engagements, and innovative multi-media presentations involving video, dance theatre, and sculpture. Huang Ruo, composer. Recently awarded First Prize by the prestigious Luxembourg International Composition Prize 2008, Huang Ruo has been cited by the New Yorker as “one of the most intriguing of the new crop of Asian-American composers.”

His vibrant and inventive musical voice draws equal inspiration from Chinese folk, Western avant-garde, rock, and jazz to create a seamless, organic integration using a compositional technique he calls “dimensionalism.” (from Presser.com). Read more…

MIGRATORY JOURNEYS ADVISORY COUNCIL

Henry Fogel, Dean, Roosevelt University Chicago College of Perfoming Arts.Henry Fogel is the Dean of the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Previously, he served as President and CEO of the American Symphony Orchestra League from 2003 to 2009. Prior to that, Mr. Fogel was President of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association for eighteen years beginning in 1985, where he oversaw not only the Orchestra, but ancillary activities including the Civic Orchestra (a training orchestra), an independent presenting series of classical, jazz, and world music attractions, the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and management of the Symphony Center facility. Mr. Fogel has been, and remains, involved with many arts organizations. He was Chairman of the Board of the American Symphony Orchestra League from 2001-2003, and served a previous ten year term as a League Trustee in the 1980s and 90s. He is a member of the Illinois Arts Alliance, which he served as both President and Chairman in the past, and is a member of the Board of WTTW-Channel 11 in Chicago, the Board of Overseers of the Curtis Institute, the Visiting Committee of the University of Chicago Music School, the Executive Committee of the Avery Fisher Artist Program and the Honorary Board of the Institute for the Study of Black Music at Columbia College. Seth Boustead, Executive Director, Access Contemporary Music. Seth Boustead received his Master of Music in music Composition from the Chicago College of the Performing Arts where he studied with Stacy Garrop, Robert Lombardo and Patricia Morehead. Seth has composed in many mediums including chamber, orchestral, jazz ensemble and film music and his music has been performed live and aired on radio stations across the United States and in Europe. A champion of modern silent films, he has composed for dozens of short silents and performed scores for many more. Read more…

Sophia Wong Boccio (Migratory Journeys Competition Director), Executive Director, Fulcrum Point New Music Project. Sophia Wong Boccio brings to a wealth of international business expertise and six years of experience as managing director of Cinema/Chicago, the not-for-profit presenter of Chicago International Film Festival. As managing director of Cinema/Chicago, Ms. Boccio managed all aspects of finance, fundraising and corporate sponsorships, marketing and public relations programs, annual galas, special events and Community Engagement program.
