In Tribute: A Chinese Voyage

In Tribute PosterIn Tribute: A Chinese Voyage, a concert in honor of our late founder Barbara Tiao and in celebration of our 25th Anniversary as part of Millennium Park’s Dusk Variations: A Chamber Series will be held on July 27, 2009 at 6:30 pm.

This highly-anticipated concert will feature luminaries such as internationally renowned violinist Rachel Barton Pine, assistant concertmaster Yuan Qing Yu and clarinetist John Bruce Yeh of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, erhu player Betti Xiang, pipa player Wei Yang and the Chicago ProMusica along with Chicago’s Cheng Da Percussion Ensemble, a ten instrument drumming group, which will bring vibrant traditional rhythms into the concert. A Chinese Voyage honors the legacy of Barbara Tiao and her contributions to developing Chinese music and arts programs and is presented as part of Chinese Cultural Week in Chicago. This program will include works by, among others, Huang Ruo, Pei Lu, Victoria Bond, and Michael Djupstrom.

The program for In Tribute: A Chinese Voyage includes

  • Drumming Prelude by Cheng Da Percussion Ensemble
  • To the Eastern Sea by Michael Djupstrom, performed by Yuan Qing Yu, Amy Briggs, Richard Hirschl, and LiKuo Chang.
  • Butterfly Lover’s Concerto by Chen Gang, He Zhanhao performed by Rachel Barton Pine, violin, and Matthew Hagle, piano
  • Jing Zhong Bao Guo by Victoria Bond, performed by Wei Yang and Guo Yang Wei
  • Tibetan Dances by Bright Sheng, performed by Rachel Barton Pine, violin, and John Bruce Yeh, clarinet
  • Man Jiang Hong: Sonata by Pei Lu, performed by Betti Xiang erhu and, Amy Briggs, piano
  • Drumming Interlude by Cheng Da Percussion Ensemble
  • Concerto for 8 Instruments by Huang Ruo performed by Chicago Pro Musica

    CFAS is pleased to announce its Third International Music Composition Competition, “Migratory Journeys.” Prizes will be awarded to composers who create new works inspired by the wandering, resettling, and emigration of Chinese diaspora population through the world.     QiXi: A Chinese Love Story

    We are honored that Millennium Park has asked CFAS to reprise QiXi: A Chinese Love Story, our traveling performance which made its debut in July, 2009. This year's performance will be presented August 22, 2010 at 2:30 pm, beginning at Cloud Gate. Adler Planetarium will present companion programming for this year's event. Read more...

    Music Festival in Honor of Confucius

    This is our annual music performance competition open to young classical musicians of all cultural backgrounds from the greater Chicago area. The 2010 MFHC will be take place at Sherwood Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago on October 24, 2010. The new repertoire listing is here!
